Different Road, Different Ride: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Lake Mead National Recreation Area reminds motorcycle riders: “Different Road, Different Ride”

Park emphasizes need for focus amidst desert landscapes during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Boulder City, Nev. — As temperatures rise and motorcyclists seek the scenic routes of southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, Lake Mead National Recreation Area is participating in the National Park Service’s “Different Road, Different Ride” campaign this May during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Lake Mead’s expansive desert vistas, winding roads, and proximity to the Hoover Dam make it a popular destination for riders. However, the park’s unique environment presents specific challenges that require heightened awareness and preparation.

“Motorcyclists love to experience the beauty of Lake Mead,” said Mike Gauthier, Superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. “But our roads have proven dangerous. Riding conditions here change quickly – unexpected curves, changing weather, wildlife crossings, distracted drivers. We’re asking riders to slow down, stay alert, and ride like a tortoise.”

Unlike urban streets or interstate highways, the roads through Lake Mead are designed to minimize impact to the natural landscape. As a result, riders may encounter:

  • Tight curves which often appear suddenly after straightaways
  • Limited shoulders with little space to correct if riders go off the road
  • Wildlife at the edge of the road or crossings, including the desert tortoise, a threatened species that calls the park home

The park averages 138 motor vehicle crashes each year, a significant amount of which involve motorcycles. To reduce the risk of a crash so they can ride for the long haul, riders are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the park’s conditions and regulations.

Key Safety Tips for Motorcyclists:

  • Slow Down on Curves – Be prepared for tight curves after long straightaways
  • Ride in Center of Lane & Single File – This position and riding formation gives riders more space to maneuver when shoulder space is limited
  • Scan the Road for Wildlife – Wildlife can often be found feeding on the side of the road and unexpectedly crossing it, especially at dusk and dawn.
  • Check Weather Conditions: Avoid riding in adverse weather, which can make road surfaces slippery.
